Polyethylenimine (PEI) is divided into linear and branched two kinds, linear polyethylenimine contains all secondary amines, while branched polyethylenimine contains primary amines, secondary amines and tertiary amines. Linear polyethylenimide of any molecular weight is a solid at room temperature, while branched polyethylenimide is a liquid. Linear PEI is soluble in methanol, ethanol or chloroform in hot water or at low pH, but not in cold water, benzene, ether and acetone; one end of the polymer chain is methyl, the other end is amino; the melting point is 73-75 ℃; it can be stored at room temperature.

Colorless or light yellow sticky liquid, hygroscopic, soluble in water, ethanol, insoluble in benzene.  Commercially available products are usually 20% to 50% aqueous solutions. The degree of polymerization used in papermaking industry is about 100, and its aqueous solution is positive. The pH value of 5% aqueous solution is 8-11. It will gel in the presence of acid. Polyethylenimide has a high reaction activity, can react with hydroxyl groups in cellulose and cross-link polymerization, so that the paper has a wet strength, and has a dry reinforcement effect. The presence of acid, alkali and aluminum sulfate will affect their wet strength and retention. It is mainly used as a wet strength agent for non-sizing absorbent paper (such as filter paper, ink-absorbing paper, toilet paper, etc.), but its paper damage is difficult to deal with. In addition, it can speed up the Pulp Filtration and make the fine fibers in white water easy to flocculate. It has strong adhesion to acid dyes and can be used as fixing agent for acid dyes. It can also be used to treat cellophane and reduce the wetting and deformation of paper. Polyethylenimide can also be used for fiber modification, dyeing auxiliaries, ion exchange resins and coagulation and sedimentation (metal capture, waste water treatment) and so on.
